Moving

First picture: Living room.
Right picture: same room approximately 3 hours later!

I can't believe we've lived in this apartment for over a month already. I LOVE it here! It is sooooo different from the condo.
Just wanted to take a minute and thank everyone who helped us with the move. We had so much help from family and friends, and we are VERY grateful to you all.

Katie and Mark!

Matt E and Steven!
The whole Estes crew after unloading the trailer.

Steph checking out the new place.

Mom helped SO much with packing up the old place and helping 'settle' the new place.

Sisters helped unpack on Day 2 and Laura put together our new DVD rack.Lauren helped hang pictures.
Also, Aunt Pat was a HUGE help with unpacking at the new place. Courtney came by to help unpack. Dad helped Matt put together some furniture. Zeb helped make some trash runs (and was our first guest!)

I might be forgetting someone, but I hope not. Again, to all of you: THANK YOU! Thank You! THANK YOU!!!

Thankful Thursday (Condo Theme)

Thankful for the year, 7 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days we will have lived in this condo. (Longest of anywhere our married lives. By far.)

Thankful for the friends and family who have spent time with us here.

Thankful for memories like breakfasts with friends, dinner parties, games that have been played here.
Thankful that we got to 'personalize' this place with our own colors (and for everyone who helped with the painting).Thankful to have experienced 2 snows while living in this condo.

Thankful to have had Nala + 4 other dogs that I can think of (from different times) here with us.Thankful for the real fireplace that we have used probably 10 times or less.

Thankful for our HUGE master bedroom that had a special tv stand from the ceiling for my husband to enjoy.

Thankful for our screened-in back porch which provided a nice 'outside space'.

Thankful we are moving away from here tomorrow!

Busy, Busy

Just a quick update of what's been going on these last couple of weeks.-We've been celebrating lots of birthdays. So far this month already: Gail, Matt, & Grandma. Not to mention several other friends.
- Thank you all so much for your encouragement and joy over our adoption news. Of course, we are so excited and love being able to share this journey with so many of you. :)
- As soon as I shared about the adoption, plans changed. The meeting that we were planning on for February 25th has actually been changed to February 18th, which meant we needed to have everything done by last week. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, so we will be going to the next meeting, which is April 29th.
-Our Community Group did a weekend away in the Saluda house this past weekend. We had so much fun, and I'll hopefully write more about it later. (Random fact: exactly 6 years ago that weekend, I was there for the Gburg SP '02 reunion.)
-We are moving THIS week to Bolton's Landing for Cares to start. So excited. And so very thankful that my Mom has been helping me pack.-Nala stayed with Mom and Laura this past weekend while we were in Saluda. When my Mom tried to bring her back to our place Monday morning, Nala absolutely refused to get in the car. My Mom had to literally drag her from the front door to the car, and she just stayed on her back the entire time. I miss my puppy, but we decided it's probably better for her to stay at Mom's until we move.
-My beautiful sister, Valerie turned 25 yesterday. We were able to be at a surprise party for her in Columbia on Sunday night. It was so much fun, and it was very cool to see so many people come out to celebrate my sister. She's amazing.-Nala's birthday is this week too. She's 4 now.

That's what we've been up to lately. Hope to get things caught up here soon.

2011: We're Moving!

So, as predicted, in this post over a year ago, 2010 was a year where we stayed put. We didn't move in 2010. The first year since we've been married, and the first year for me with no moving at all since 2000!!! In fact, the condo was the place we've stayed the longest (almost double!) than any other place we've lived in our married life. We enjoyed some of the stability. But...
... as I wrote about in this post last June, we have been wanting do the the Cares ministry in Charleston. This week, things have been finalized for us to move into Bolton's Landing here in West Ashley in order to be the Cares team there! We'll be moving over there on February 18th. We're so excited! It will be quite an adjustment as we learn to change our schedules around to focus more on our neighbors and building relationships with them. This is one of the reasons I am taking a break from grad school. We'll be planning about 3 events per month for our community and doing visits to neighbors when they move in, when they are close to being out of their leases, and also if we hear someone is sick or in need of some company. But, we feel like this will be a great fit for us, and a great opportunity to meet lots of new people and hopefully for us to be able to invest into people's lives.

Decorating for Christmas

We decorated 2 weeks ago and Steven, Steph and Mark joined us. Steven loves everything Christmas, so he came with us to pick out our tree too. We actually went to more than one lot to find the right one. And ended up getting our tree from the same place as last year.

Nala trying on the skirt before it went around the tree.
Matt and Steven starting the lights.
Pregnant Stephani needed to chill for a little while.
But she was a huge help screening the ornaments.
The peanut gallery.
Our Christmas Corner.
Tree with some presents underneath.

Thankful Thursday

I'm thankful for the cooler weather. I've even been cold this week. It can stay these temps until April.

I'm thankful for my job. I don't always love it, but I'm thankful for it. And the good benefits that come with it.

I'm thankful that I can be in grad school for free. I definitely regret my decision to take 2 classes this quarter, but I'm thankful that I have the opportunity to take these classes.

I'm thankful for Matt helping with housework so much.

I'm thankful to have only one dog--and this dog being Nala. Several times a day I am thankful for this.I'm thankful for the next 10 days having lots of fun stuff that out-of-the-ordinary.

I'm thankful for such a fun Community Group.

I'm super, extremely thankful that my best friend will be returning to the States this month and that I will probably get some quality Ginger time fairly soon. :)

Sad Day. Farewell Fiona.

Well, Fiona is no longer part of our family (well, at least she won't be part of our future). I'm so sad as I write this, but I'm also feeling quite a bit relieved. And I'll probably feel a lot more relieved once the sadness wears off.For weeks now, we have been trying to find another--better--home for Fiona. Little girl just had way too much energy for this little condo, and she was pretty defiant and getting to be very dominant. Though sometimes she could be the sweetest, cuddliest dog, there were also times when she would be a little devil.A couple of months ago, this guy came to our door and seemed to get along with her really well. He asked if he could take her home... It's a long story, really, but at that point, she had only been with us a few weeks, and we were still hoping that we could turn her around. 10 days later, I called him to say that he could have her. But I never heard back. But, the moment that I started envisioning Fiona living on his farm, with another puppy, with lots of land to run in, it seemed to plant a seed. I realized that she really would be better off with a different type of family. She's not content to be a couch potato like Nala. She needs more attention than we're able to give her, and she needs more time put into her discipline than we have.

Matt jokes that she 'misrepresented herself' when we adopted her. Ironically, the reasons that we chose her were because she was calm & submissive and that she didn't bark. Boy, were we fooled!!! She ended up being a crazy monster who in fact, hardly ever stopped barking. That's not a good fit for a small condo. Especially a condo that also houses a rather large, injured dog.
Our neighbors tried to fine us for her barking (as if we could stop her if we tried!). Eventually, we got a muzzle and had to keep her muzzled a majority of the time. Still, she found a way to make an enormous amount of noise in the form of a high-pitched yelp. Ugh. So frustrating.

Then, there was the house-training. She was potty trained, for the most part, when we got her. However, she seemed to always want to make a statement in the form of some type of deposit on our floors--or on our bed. I can't even count the amount of times she peed on our bed. Mostly right after she had been fussed at. Then, there was the one time she peed on Matt's face. And the fact that she was sick for weeks, and every night, we'd come home to diarrhea/poop in her crate and have to spend a couple hours cleaning up after her. A couple hours that we really didn't have to spare. I haven't even been able to do the 'normal' laundry entirely pretty much since we got her... because we were constantly cleaning up after her messes. Washing sheets from our bed, washing blankets, washing the comforter, and also washing all the blankets and sheets from her bed. (Man, I look forward to doing normal laundry!!)All that being said, I am sad to see her go. I have struggled so much with giving her away because I don't want her to feel 'rejected' or 'not good enough' or 'unloved'. I don't want her to think that we don't love her because she was bad. I also don't want people to judge me for being a failure as a dog-owner or for being irresponsible or selfish. Man, that's some vulnerability right there, but as I verbalized all of this to my sister on the way home from work, I was balling my eyes out as all of those things cut really deep. I think I struggle so much with 'rejecting' Fiona because I can picture myself in her shoes.
I need to remember that she's a dog. She can't rationally think through any of these things. She can't logically understand the reasons we couldn't keep her or even the reasons that we struggled with giving her away. She's not a person.

Which leads me to one of my other fears: someone joked with us a couple weeks ago that when we have children, we won't be able to give them back like we can return or re-home a dog. Though I'm sure the person (and I can't even remember who it was) didn't realize it, they were actually verbalizing the very thoughts I've been afraid people would have. I don't want people to think that Matt and I are too irresponsible for children. We learned a lot of things about parenting through Fiona: about sacrificing time, about the way we work together, about discipline, and about frustrations. In the end, we sort of admitted defeat but also realized we were probably being selfish in trying to prove that we could do it. In fact, at this time, in this season, we can't handle her. Though parenting a child has it's similarities, it's also different on way more levels.

Probably more later, but this is all I can process right now...

A first for me...

So, last week, I wrote about having an excuse to bake. I was really excited as baking is a good stress reliever for me, but I didn't have any mixes in the cabinet and didn't want to go to the grocery store. As I was rummaging through my cabinet, I found a recipe for chocolate cake (and frosting) on the Cocoa container.I made this cake ALL from scratch. It was SOO much fun and reminded me of cooking/baking in Uz, where I got to learn a lot of the basics of made-from-scratch cooking from my friend Emily.

Though it wasn't the most structurally-sound cake I've ever seen, it tasted just fine. :)

Thankful Thursday

I'm thankful for the leak under our house getting fixed rather quickly and our kitchen being torn up for only about 24 hours.

I'm thankful for a working washer & dryer.

I'm thankful for an excuse to bake (asked to bring dessert to a friend's house for dinner tonight.)

I'm thankful for being invited to a friend's house for dinner and games tonight.

I'm thankful that I'm going to be an aunt!!!!!!!!! (In May 2011. Matt's sister, Stephani, is pregnant!)

Fiona Adventures

To be honest, I thought that Fiona was a small dog. I didn't really comprehend that she was a puppy. I probably would not have been so excited about getting her. Our first couple weeks were pretty rough with all the whining, yelping, barking, and house training. I thought I was going to go insane! Thankfully, she's doing much better now, but here are some of the adventures we tackled:
1. She seems to have come to us with giardia, which is a not-so-fun infection of her intestines. She's had some lovely explosive diarrhea that sometimes greets us in (and out of) her kennel when we come home. Thus, the pictures of her first bath. (Much better than a picture of the mess, I assure you.) Thankfully, Matt works at a great vet and gets good discounts on treatment for her. 2. I think on day #2 or 3, we had a dog bed laying beside her kennel because we thought Nala may want to lay close to her while we were gone. This site greeted us when we got home. Somehow, puppy managed to get the dog bed partially inside the crate, enough for her to tear out the insides and completely ruin the entire (XL-sized) dog bed. The next day, Matt came home from work and found that she had somehow pushed the bottom liner of the crate out and eaten a large portion of the carpet under her crate. (Goodbye, security deposit.)

3. As a result of the above incident, we decided to try keeping both the dogs out together but limited to one hallway. We bought this nice gate from Petsmart. There was nothing shredable. 4. We came home to this: Oh, Fiona...

She proves to me all the time that Nala really is the perfect dog. ;)

Welcome, Fiona Jayne Flagler!

Fiona Jayne became part of our family on July 7th, 2010, our 3rd anniversary!

We found her at the Berkeley County ASPCA on July 5th, but it took a couple of days to get everything worked out with our landlord. We loved her right away! When we walked back into the room of dogs, we saw a dog that looked a lot like Nala. He started barking right away, which caused almost all of the dogs to start barking! Fiona was one of the 2 dogs who did not bark, so we were attracted to her. We took her back into the room to get to know her and wanted to take her home right away, but we had to come back the next day for Nala to meet her to make sure they would get along. They got along just fine. :) And we still loved her (at that time, her name was Maggie), so we pursued the application to get her. We've had many adventures this last month but are very glad that she has become part of our family. Nala seems to love being an older sister, even though she can sometimes seem very annoyed with her 'little sis'. More updates of Fiona's adventures to come...

Video of Nala Eating

Found this video when we were transferring stuff to the new computer. Nala went through this stage where she would ONLY eat her food straight off the floor and had a funny dance she would do to get it from the bowl to the floor. Hasn't done it in awhile, so I'm glad Matt caught it on video! :)

Our (Current) Fish

I confess that this is one of those posts I'm doing more for documentation than communication. I want to document the 'everyday' of our lives so we can look back on it one day and remember the little things.

That being said, if you're interested in fish, then stick around for a tour of our tank. :)
This is a cardinal fish. He's one of the first we had. We started out with I think about 12 of these but are down to 1. He's a survivor.

Black Ghost Knife is a super-unique fish. Matt has wanted one for a long time, and we finally special ordered one. He's by far the coolest fish we have. He's soooo fun to watch.

This is a Pleco, a cleaner fish. He's one of the most fun to watch cuz he's usually busy eating the algae from all over the tank. He's gotten bigger in the last few weeks since we got him, and he has potential to get HUGE!

We have 3 of these Golden Halfbeaks. They skim the top of the tank and eat with the top half of their mouths which are shorter than the bottom. It's so weird to watch, but their eating is the only time they're interesting. We'll probably be trading them in shortly.

This big guy is a new addition. He's currently the biggest and will get a LOT bigger. I can't remember his name, but I know that he's big, and he helps 'clean' the tank. He's a keeper for sure.

These are vampire tetras, and they like to be together and move around the tank a lot. We had 5 but are down to 4.

This pair is a recent addition to the tank. But we aren't crazy about them. Can't remember what kind. I think there is 'thin fin' in the name.

This is Rosy Barb. She and Blue Ram like to pick on each other. I like her a lot.

This is Rainbow Fish. He's pretty big, and he's supposed to get a lot bigger.

This is Blue Ram. He's kind of the bully of the tank, but his colors are my favorite.

That's all for now. :)
